A HALO lover's take on TS2 (rather long, sorry) | |

In Response To: Re: Timesplitters2 roXorz and will be game of the (Warbow) I own both HALO and TS2. First of all, I'd like to say that there are alot of things that I like about TS2: -The 'cartoon'-style animation and character models really appeal to me (though I'm sot sure why exactly); -The game is rate T - there's no blood. It's nice to see that developpers can still make shooters without spraying the walls with gore. -Alot of the guns are very neat. -Level design is quite good, with lots to do depending on what difficulty you decide to play. -Character animations are very good, particularly the AI's reaction to being hit - very good work here (I think it's called 'inverse kinematics'...whatever that means). -The multiplayer options are, in a word, sick. There's SO much you can do with this game and a couple of friends, it's almost not right - not the least of which is build your own single and multiplayer maps. That said, there are a few things I don't like: -You never see you hand holding your weapons. Doesn't matter if it's a sniper rifle or flamethrower or rocket launcher - you hold it one handed. Kind of silly if you ask me. Also, there are no reload animations. Generally, the weapon just dips down, then comes back up, fully loaded (the shotgun is an exception - it points up, then resets to its normal position). This just irks me. -A few of the weapons just don't seem to work right: why does the assault rifle's grenade launcher fire hand grenades (with timers) instead of impact explosives? And how do enemies survive two (or more!) point-blank shotgun blasts to the torso? Was I just spoiled by HALO's 8-gauge? -Trying to shoot straight without auto-aim on is quite difficult (I'm not sure why - it's just considerably more of a pain than in HALO. I think it's the auto-spring-back-to-center that screws me up. Can this be corrected? I haven't managed to yet). I don't like auto-aim. It feels very N64-ish, and I prefer games that give me more control and less hand-holding. -The single-player story is a joke. The evil Timesplitters hide the powerful Time Crystals in various points throughout history...and then leave them there. They don't bother hanging around to make sure the crystals aren't found, they just assume that they'll be safe and move on. Good villains are hard to come by, but these guys are borderline incompetent. By contrast, HALO offers: -Lots of beautiful, open environments, which I happen to like. -Detailed weapon models and animations. -A compelling single-player story populated by interesting characters that don't feel like throw-away skins (as they do in TS2). -An addictive and fun multiplayer mode - it may not be as polished as TS2's, but that's because in truth, TS2 was designed to be a multiplayer experience, with a single-player game tacked on for additional interest. HALO works the other way around. Both games are very good at what they do best. Overall, HALO does Single-player unbelievably well and multiplyer very well indeed. TS2 does single-player passably well, and multiplayer unbelievably well. In my opinion, HALO is still a better game, but TS2 is a strong addition to the XBox lineup. Now, can't we all just get along? Cheers! Scalrag |
