While it's been ages since I've done the OG Xbox version, in MCC especially the solution I've always found to landing squarely is to look up when driving over. Of course, it's not a very *satisfying* way to go, as you don't get to actually watch your descent, so it doesn't get much on style points, though I suppose there's a bit more dignity. I'll have to try your speed method next time.
