They're not as efficient as possible because they don't have a counter current exchange mechanism. Oxygen travels across the air/blood barrier via diffusion and that is most efficient if deoxygenated blood is only exposed to low oxygen air and high oxygen blood only exposed to high oxygen air.

Fish gills do this (with water) but bird lungs don't. So Doctor Halsey could probably 3D print a better design

Though I imagine that Spartans could make good use of that fusion reactor on their backs to convert co2 and water in their tissues back into oxygen and sugars they wouldn't need to breathe it out of the air.

But the artificial lung ploy us something to watch out for in the Olympics in decades to come.
