Re: co-developing with Skybox Labs

In Response To: co-developing with Skybox Labs (scarab)

: Is this simply because AAA games are now so big or does 343 not have the
: right/good-enough talent?

: Are they still co-developing with Certain Affinity?

: The Skybox Labs About page claims that their core strength is design (game
: play as opposed to art design). They say, Our team prides itself on
: moving fast and proving out the core of our designs as quickly as
: possible. We’ve found that the key to making great games is iterating
: rapidly to find the ‘fun’ first. We like to pre-visualize our ideas to
: make sure everyone is on the same page, and then get early prototypes in
: front of users as quickly as possible to validate our design assumptions.
: We layer on depth and usability once we know we have something magical.

: I found that some of 343's new, campaign, game play innovations in H5 were
: rather poor. I'm looking at you,
: chief-grovelling-on-the-floor-begging-for-help whilst your team mates fail
: to climb a 2 foot high ledge to give you first aid.

: To me that was the antithesis of fun and, severely, undermined the Chief's,
: character and image. (Did anybody ever imagine that we'd see the Chief
: plead for assistance?)

: So maybe they can find out what sucks before they build a game around it. Are
: they just outsourcing the process or are they hiring-in good-judgement? In
: my opinion the main problem was lack of judgement, being unable to tell
: the difference between bad idea and good idea. It's a taste thing that
: would not be fixed by importing fast development iterations.

: Maybe they are addressing a weakness in their processes and are addressing it
: by outsourcing.

Halo Infinite and the Showtime TV show are two different things :P

I don't think reading into the Infinite co-developer makes much sense though. Every game since Halo 2 has had some level of third-party involvement, and since Reach that's only grown.
