In Response To: Idea for a Spin-off Halo Game (Cody Moore)

: I wasn't a big fan of Halo 4. Halo 5 didn't feel that great either. I think
: for me, the Covenant war is much more interesting than the newer stories.
: The books hit a slump for a bit, but the last few have been pretty good.
: The Banished are an interesting idea, and the Storm Covenant could have
: been great (Why was their leader killed off instantly at the beginning of
: Halo 5?!) The Forerunner were better spoken of instead of shown. They lose
: their mysteriousness when shown, and the Didact and Warden Eternal were...
: not the best boss battles in a game that used to claim (CLAIM!) no boss
: battles. On top of this, we keep getting these character we're instantly
: supposed to like with little build up that is completely unearned. Locke
: and Palmer as characters were not well received and suffered because of
: this.

: For these reasons, I think a spin-off game set in the Human/Covenant war
: could be really fun. It would have the freedom to stray from convention.
: I've had this idea for a game for a while, and then began reading
: "Legacy of Onyx" which has a similar introduction. I decided to
: share my idea and if others enjoyed it, I would develop it further. The
: game would be a "Rise of a Spartan" type game. You begin the
: game as a child and end the game as a Spartan III/IV. Each time you age,
: the camera would get higher and your run speed and jump height would
: increase. I thought that about halfway through the game you become a
: Spartan, and the game becomes more open-world. After each mission, you get
: a specific accessory or upgrade and by the end of the game you are fully
: outfitted and a complete and total bad-a. For this reason, the game
: focuses on building characters (a lot like Reach and ODST tried to do).
: Without further adieu, my introduction for the game.

I'm not sure about the upgrade system. Feels too arcade-style, and I like how the first weapons you get in a Halo game are still relevant by the time the last level rolls around.

I can see it working for the first half of a game before you become a Spartan (presumably a Spartan III) when the character is training to become a soldier. Like, the first level could be an obstacle course (Teaching movement to the player) and a shooting range where the character first picks up a rifle. And to emphasize the difficulty of aiming a rifle for the first time, the player has to line up the front and rear sights of the rifle with the left and right joystick. After that comes land navigation where the HUD compass, utility items, and teammates are introduced. Then comes tactical training (Basic weapons, shooting, ect) and armor training (SPI 'shields', using stealth to evade the trainers).

After the midpoint of the game, the level design is closer to the traditional Halo game, and the upgrades are no longer sequential. You get mission-specific kit, and some of your stats improve with each level, because more power assist or more armor plating gets added to the SPI armor.

What do you think?
