I guess they can keep using him forever, but I just don't feel that's very interesting. I'd like to see new characters take the lead role eventually. I even like the Spartan IVs, I just don't think they've had a compelling character yet. Although, that's not true, either. I liked all of Osiris except for Locke. He was just sort of boring.

I haven't kept up with the Halo novels. The Forerunner trilogy was the last set I read. I'd like to see more good Halo novels, too. But one of the big complaints about Halo 4 was that you needed to have read that trilogy to really understand what was going on. I don't anticipate them making that mistake again.
First Strike was a pretty good example of how to get it right, I think. It bridged the two games wonderfully, but it wasn't necessary at all to understand what was happening in the game. It just filled in how Chief got from point A to point B, which isn't necessary to know if you just take the time jump between the two games at face value.
