There was a better explanation in the novels: The Force abhors a planet-destroying superweapon, and twists probability into knots until the seemingly random actions of nearby Force-sensitives bring about the weapon's destruction.

And while satirical, it does have a point. The exhaust ports were a fatal weakness, but they also served a necessary function. They weren't easy to hit either. To be located, and for their weakness to be known, the blueprints for the Death Star had to be stolen. The exhaust ports were ray-shielded to protect against random strikes, and the fighters had to pass through the turbolasers and the Death Star's own fighter screen.

Most telling is the fact that attacking that exhaust port was the desperate last-minute idea that the Rebel planners came up with after a few hours with the blueprints, and the reaction of the seasoned non-Jedi fighter pilots was "No way that shot is possible."
