His second melee attempt took me by surprise; I was expecting him to start growling because of the tag. Had to back off quick! Like you, it made me wonder about priority issues. Perhaps melee initiation gets priority over tag-reaction, or perhaps there's some randomness to it. I'd have to do some testing to check into it.
