Despite the fact that we live in an age of "proper facial and performance capture", Naughty dog somehow managed to buck that trend without destroying the "immersion in the story".

The excuse given is pretty idiotic, but then, I'm sure Grim was just given instructions to throw any BS answer to shut the nerds up, and he whipped something up on the spot, rather than saying "well, it was just what we could do with the resources on hand."
... Which, honestly, would have been a far better answer.
