Not sure on your specific questions (not really in my wheelhouse lol), but as for your second one I would have to guess that your assumption might be correct. I'd almost guarantee that if they removed the feature it's because it was causing bigger problems elsewhere. No one here is ever giddy about "removing features" (despite what plenty of people I'm sure assume). Trust me, no one wants the community to have all teh things and be across-the-board happy more than we do.
