But I do find them annoying and pointless - we know the real reasons that bizarre armour variants exist - a business decision has been made to offer a lot of armour variations - they need to look distinctive and a designer thought a Greek look would be cool. And I'm OK with that.
I can agree to disagree on the look of the armour because taste is subjective. But if 343 decides to release a helmet with antlers and a red nose for Christmas then some poor writing type is going to have to come up with an in universe 'reason' for it.
I think these in universe reasons are just calling attention to the problem that some game features don't really sit well with the fiction. If 343 wants to release a fire breathing dragon armour then they should just do it and not try to convince us that any sane military would produce such an item. We won't believe them no matter what they say - and we get that it's just a game, some people will like the armour and wear it and I won't care.
I might find it amusing that somebody actually tried to 'explain' in universe why the armour exists. I might find the explanation funny so I'll laugh now and then when things get too ridiculous. I like the idea that there just might exist a gourmand armour set specially designed for eating snails whose shells coil to the left (the gauntlets have an attachment to winkle them out of their shells). They might not work for right handed snails but I hear that there is a completely different armour set just for that. Actually there are two sinister and three dexter versions, all made by different military and civilian consortiums to meet the demands of the burgeoning foody Spartan set. One set lets you eat snails under water, one lets you eat snails on a gas giant, there is a scout version and two CBQ versions.
For some reason companies feel obliged to generate lots of lore waffle for each of the many cosmetic variants they, ultimately?, want to sell to customers. I suppose that some people love that stuff even if for me it's just noise.
And there's the problem of repetition, just what do you write for yet another scout variant or field commander variant? Why is this variant any different/better than all the others that preceded it?
