Re: Still no word on new control layouts for Forge

: Not happening. I understand why it's frustrating—I'm definitely in the same
: boat as you—but at some point it was inevitable. Having vehicle-based
: controls made sense for when the Monitor essentially *was* a vehicle to
: spawn in objects, but now that Forge has dived whole-hog into being a map
: editor first and foremost controls more conducive to that needed to happen.

: Some things like swapping the D-pad controls were less necessary and irksome,
: but them's the breaks. Even though the controls still don't feel
: "natural" to me and won't for some time, I can already tell that
: it's a *better* way of controlling things—especially when it comes to
: quick and easy rotation.

I don't know what you're talking about for rotation, it's still hold right trigger -> push stick, they just switched the sticks around and took away diagonal rotation.

The control abilities are great, but I still fail to see how the control layout is better. I mean sure, I don't use the "paint the targets" selection ability, but that's because I tried it and it felt awkward and I had to pass over a group multiple times and then remember to deselect the floor. If it speeds up your Forging, great, but I don't think it's worth making vertical movement more cumbersome. I haven't seen any other real defense of the new controls that I can remember.

I also contest the "thems the breaks" view of moving things around, it's not like they had to change the d-pad controls or switch X and Y; I can't think of why they would even think it would be helpful or useful.

Speaking of which, can we please, please get an option for vertical movement on the triggers? I've been missing analog vertical movement since Reach took it away (in Halo 3 you could aim upwards and use the analog sticks). I would use that constantly, as opposed to the ability to move or turn things slower by holding the trigger down part-way, which I never use because of the snap options and precision mode and because everything sort of sloppily snaps at small increments when you're going slowly regardless.

(Has anyone else noticed that? If you go really slow it acts like the Z-fight fixer is on. What's really wacky is whether you have it on or not the snap is bigger than it feels like it should be and it's not consistent. You can move three ticks left and then three ticks right and not have the piece where it started.)
