As pointed out, it becomes a disincentive to actually kill bosses (whereas now, even if you're behind in points the bosses can dramatically turn the tide, so it behooves you to either lock a spot down, or try and be sneaky.)
Awarding points based on damage is a rich-get-richer mechanic that would stifle comebacks.
