On Lasky

In Response To: What's Halo 5 about? (Cody Miller)

: Not only do the characters stand for little in Halo 5, they are often
: completely inconsistent with how I know them. Lasky is the most obvious
: example. It’s pretty obvious that Lasky respects and trusts the Chief. The
: Chief saved his ass at the academy, and when the Chief decided to defy Del
: Rio, Lasky helped him do it by giving him a pelican. Even though you know,
: Cortana was completely glitching out and behaving strangely. Lasky did
: this because he believed in the Chief.

: Given that, and given their history, you are going to tell me that the
: following exchange is what puts them at odds?

: Chief: Cortana’s on Meridian. I want to go find her.
: Lasky: Naw man, we got people on it already.
: Chief: I don’t care I”m still going.

: REALLY?! After all they’ve been through THAT does it? That’s the weakest
: fucking thing I’ve ever seen. If anything, he’d HELP him find Cortana!

So at the end of Halo 4, there was that whole scene where Lasky comes to talk to the Chief after he loses Cortana. It's visibly awkward for Lasky because the Chief won't say anything, until he finally offers, "Our duty as soldiers is to protect humanity, whatever the cost." Looking completely baffled, Lasky tells the Chief that soldiers aren't machines, and walks off with a sad, incredulous look on his face.

Maybe I'm projecting, but I always saw that as a pivotal change in Lasky's feelings toward the Master Chief, and one of a handful of really excellent character moments in Halo 4. He *used* to see the Chief as a saintly hero, but in that moment he realized that the Chief is really just a grown-up child soldier without a full-fledged understanding of the world - someone to be pitied, not idolized. That's not to say this is an entirely fair summation of John, but it's what Lasky was plainly thinking.

So yeah, I thought Lasky's less-than-warm handling of the Chief going AWOL in Halo 5 was entirely in character. Plus, he's got five 'o clock shadow now, so you can tell he's haunted or whatever.

: Arbiter - There’s so much wrong I don’t even know where to begin. It was like
: I was looking at a totally different character. Maybe he’s the new
: arbiter?

Can you elaborate? What's wrong with the Arbiter?
