Some people think that the Cortana's nude appearance have her a confidence and making people uncomfortable. Funny how you interpret that the exact opposite way.

: players, (and possibly the Master Chief), it allowed them to see Cortana
: as a possible mate for the hero.

Our child and possible mate, huh? So how far do you have to stay from schools?
I never really took her nudity to mean any of those things. It's just how she chose to look, and it made her character unique and iconic. It's not like she's really a female either, despite what 343 tried to go for in Halo 4 (yet she is made from the mind of a female, one that 343 has demonized since they took the reins).

: personality, and her appearance, allowed players to fall in love with her
: in some form. We cared for Cortana a great deal. She was the light at the
: end of the dark tunnel that we could ALWAYS rely on.

Except when playing as Arbiter, and the majority of Halo 3, and the entirety of ODST and Reach... But sure. Some people like you may have fallen in love with the random image search results of Cortana, but she was more of a sidekick to me, and not someone that I gave strong feelings toward, because she was a supercomputer with attitude.
I will say, though, that playing 343 Guilty Spark without her in your head was a stroke of genius on Bungie's part. We felt truly alone, and it made it very evident that having her helped us cope with an otherwise lonely experience.
Nothing to do with nudity, though.
