A gamer is dimply seeing a by product of 3D modeling. Everything in 3D is made up of polygons. These polygons are made up of connected vertices. Look at a round object in Halo1-3 and you're easily see points. These points are the vertices. The straight lines between them are referred to as segments. When 3 or more vertices are connect together (via segments), we get a polygon.
To create a round shape, at some point the, a polygon has to be closed at a point. In games, this is often done by joining many vertices to one vertice. In Movies and no-interactive 3D projects, a polygon is rarely made up of only 3 vertices. This is because they result on 3 sharp points can not be easily sub-surfaced (smoothed out with more detail). But in games, Sub-Suffacing is not used because it results in lag and longer render times. Not a good thing when dealing in real-time and interactive objects.
Because of all of this, game models are often made with triangles. this allows more detail but as a result, creates more polygons. One four pointed (ie square) polygon becomes two polygons made up of two triangles. In the games, the more triangles you have, the rounder you can make a object. Something non-games can achieve with a simple cube.

Notice how the nipple is not formed but it still gives the basic appearance of one?
