They obviously felt that they could tell a better story (from their perspective) with that slight 'adjustment'. In looking at the long-term future of the franchise, they likely felt this was the direction they wanted to take it, and were willing to bite the bullet on the hand-waving/retcon required to feasible (from their perspective) explain away certain things.
So now, whether one feels that change in direction actually works or not, and whether one likes it or not, is completely subjective :).
