Humans not being Forerunner is the point they lost me. Why take this huge reveal and just chunk it out the window? That's where it makes me feel like they hired writers that didn't know squat about the Halo universe and just signed off on whatever they wrote. See also: Karen Traviss.

This is like the new Star Wars movie coming out and them saying "Vader? Yeah, that guy was Luke's 3rd grade science teacher or something". It just ruins a major part of the story.
