Yeah, I wish you got to fight alongside more friendlies too, but there's always the next game :)

Really probably the best way to play them is as a more effective version of the marines, using them for the endless ammo and accuracy, and telling them which vantage points to use (I found the "kill this enemy" bit usually a little too risky to use, since the main weakness of the AI seems to be engaging at close quarters with enemies they really shouldn't, namely Knights and the Warden... so unless I knew exactly who was around to fight I would mostly just let them run interference.)
