Operation Chastity - A Belated Look

So on Halopedia we sometimes document particularly notable fan projects, such as Levi's "Fistful of Arrows" or "Red vs. Blue". A while back in April I was researching the cancelled fanfilm "Operation Chastity", scrounging up as much as I could across the web to include on the artlcle. Stephen Loftus had joined the wiki recently, and he had mentioned aiding with production once, so I contacted him and asked if he could say anything about the film's plot or such. It took a while but he delivered above and beyond, as he got in contact with the director Pete Cooper who passed me along a copy of Chastity's script!

I've summarized the film on Halopedia, and Cooper has given the green light to post up the script. You can read the summary here, and the full screenplay here.

My thoughts on the film were very positive, though they started out incredulous. I did roll my eyes once at what appeared to be an incoming Fatal Family Photo cliche (though thankfully it doesn't go that route), and there were a lot of characters to keep track of at first. Some of the setpiece descriptions sounded so grandiose that I was unsure how they expected to film something so expensive on a non-profit budget in the first place. But it goes in a gritty route that we haven't seen since "Halo: Landfall", and felt more subdued about its darkness of war themes than "Halo: The Fallen", which just came out last week and was still fresh in my mind. While it's military focused, it doesn't merely cover the action in a paintjob of jargon, and I liked how there were bits of interservice rivalry between the protagonists recon marines and the reserve marines later on. Spartan Maria was of course a highlight; it was great to see her again. There's also a pretty surprising twist that got me unexpectedly terrified; I turned from somewhat apathetic about the conflict to "oh gosh, it really can all end here..." So much for not being scared this Halloween.

It's a real shame that the film won't be completed, but at least we can know what it would've been like. And in a odd way, just reading and imagining Chastity in my head made it feel just as impressive as it should've been, without potential flaws weighing it down like bad acting or unfinished special effects. When Halo finally comes to the bigscreen, let's hope that passionate fans like Cooper and others who helped him are there.
