Halo 5 Guardians (Hyokin's Review) (spoilers)

Campaign:

Halo 5: Guardians has an interesting start, with Fireteam Osiris plunging into combat between Jul's Covenant and the Prometheans, as they search for Doctor Halsey. The story picks up with Blue Team discovering Cortana is alive and might be on Meridian. Things get intense, the Master Chief and Blue Team go AWOL and Locke is forced to hunt them down.

I got chills when Locke and the Master Chief begin fighting one-on-one.

Overall, I really enjoyed the campaign and the story that 343 Industries told. There was a lot of tension, I cared about these characters and places, and I loved the twist at the end where Cortana makes her appearance.

Can I also say that Exuberant is the most precious cinnamon roll who is too good for this world?

Absolutely loved her!

The ending was definitely reminiscent of Halo 2, but in a good way. You knew there wasn't another level, you didn't throw your controller, you just watched as things went to hell and it hyped me up for the next game because I have no idea where this story is going and I love it.

Arena:

Last year, we experienced the Halo 5 Multiplayer Beta. I had a number of problems connecting to matches, the game kept crashing, and failing to load. In the rare times I did get into games, I enjoyed myself for the most part.

Having played the final product, I have no such issues.

The matches connect reasonably fast with fairly even opponents and while I still find the gameplay to be too fast-paced for my personal liking, it is definitely fun. The weapons are all balanced really well, but feel strong and slow in my hands. I also fell like movement is less smooth because you're always thrusting or sprinting, which can only be in one direction at a time.

Meaning you can turn full speed mid-sprint in a 90 degree angle. You have to ease yourself to the side.

It's not a bad thing, but definitely something I'll be experimenting with in the Custom Game settings.

War Zone:

I've only played a few matches of War Zone, but I found it to be pretty entertaining!

The games are huge and the sheer amount of things to do can be slightly overwhelming! The REQ system is very balanced and I haven't had a time where one team completely destroyed another from having paid more money into it.

The Boss characters are interesting and I wish we had some more lore about them.

Looking forward to playing some more, but I really feel like BTB is what I am truly aching for and will probably stop playing War Zone once it comes out. Or at the very least, bounce between the two.

Custom Games:

Unfortunately, Halo 5: Guardians goes the same route as Halo 4 and removed a bunch of the default gametypes. There's no Assault, KOTH, and a number of other modes are missing. Thankfully, they managed to include their new weird gametypes and Breakout...

With no Forge for almost two months, Customs Night is forced to rely on the gametypes within the launch version to create our own games. We're stuck with default maps and the handful of gametypes left which removes a lot of our flexibility. Sure, we have a lot of options like movement, gravity, weapons, etc. That's awesome!

But by cutting so many gametypes... again... we're going to be struggling to fill the void until Forge comes out. Hopefully, we'll get some larger maps too. All of the shipping maps are small-medium and lack vehicles(as far as I've seen.)

This makes for a lot of repetitive, boring, gameplay for those who want something besides vanilla.

The lack of Custom Gametypes is a major flaw in Halo 5.

Theater:

Back to the good stuff!

Halo 5: Guardians has a couple of nice features added to Theater mode!

You can now enable a "highlight" feature, which outlines every player model on the map in their team color. This allows you to see where every player is at once and their different engagements. I feel like this will be a vital tool for map makers and competitive players alike for seeing how players move and interact with their environment.

The other new feature is the ability to "Fast Forward" a video without having to watch the entire clip first! In the previous games, if you had a 2-hour game and wanted a clip in the last 5-minutes, you had to sit holding the forward trigger for ages.

Now, you can just skip forward 20-seconds, or straight to the end of the film and "rewind" back 20-seconds at a time. It's a nice addition and something we've all been asking for since Halo 3!

Forge:

Forge does not launch with Halo 5: Guardians, which is a major setback for the map making and customs communities. Thankfully, the Forge that we're going to be seeing sometime in December looks amazing and I look forward to seeing how it works when it does launch.

Halo 5: Guardians - 8/10
