: My guess is that Maya is only clinically dead as of the end. Evidently her
: body was recovered and her brain is still working, meaning either she's
: still barely alive but in a coma and too wounded to be revived or she was
: dead for hours and ONI has been jumpstarting her brain through artificial
: means. Like Linda, she's in a state of bodily death and mental limbo for
: now.
But she also spoke as if she were an AI, being blocked out of systems. The implication is that she is now an AI, at least in some form.
She says "They're still restricting my access." (What are they actually restricting her from? Something of herself, or access to networks in the real world?)
...although BB does say "She is an exceptional candidate for AI."
Listening again, it sounds more like an interim stage in becoming a full-fledged AI, perhaps before the memory lockdown. ie, they saved her brain, and they're 'cleaning it up', as it were, cataloguing memories, before the final process. Wasn't it actually similar to this in the Forerunner trilogy? Been a while since I read that part...
Maya: "What is this place?"
BB: "Just think of it as a waiting room. Don't worry, there'll be time to explain later. I'll let them know you're ready for the next step. None of us stays on the shelf for very long. We're very, very expensive."
