Isn't he kind of right though? If you really actually took the stance you claim to, wouldn't the proper thing be to play the game without buying it? I am not talking piracy, but rather by renting it, playing it at a friend's house, etc. Then, after you know it's a step in the right direction, you can buy it on your own.

I don't even have an xbox one, so I'm gonna end up playing it with friends on theirs. And dude, I'm not even that fervent about the MCC debacle. You kind of did cop out man.
