It's sort of always the same story with these fan films. The ones that work are either:

1. Short
2. Done by professionals
3. Very conscious of their limitations.

You are looking at a franchise where even the official movies have shitty effects. There's no way a fan film is going to measure up if its effects heavy. Build a set, shoot it live, and focus on the story. Forward Unto Dawn did that and it turned out the best.
