Das might be a charlatan, and he might ultimately be too willing to drink his own Kool-Aid (ironically, making him a whole lot like the Covenant Prophets), but he's not stupid. It's clear that while the UNSC is hushing things up, a lot of people are noticing what's going on, and it seems entirely feasible he could have figured out the signs of what's going on and made sure to get to the next location.
