Aren't those stories written to be that way though? If it was actually new people coming in, it would be one thing, but if they're going by the standard they set for themselves (and have apparently been keeping to OK), this will by necessity tie into other fiction in some way(s), and they have to take into account what people already know about these characters and their relationships. That limits what they can write and it changes how the story will be received by a chunk of the audience (some would say the chunk most interested in the story in the first place). Trying to write for what is essentially two audiences is not easy. A way to remedy those issues and possibly prevent some problems is to bring everyone up to speed on what's been established. However they go about it, I hope it's better than what they did with the Didact.
