One other thought: consider how little we knew at the beginning of Halo:CE. We're dropped into a war in progress. Cortana's dropping terms like "Covenant" and "Reach" and "CSS-class ship" in the opening cutscene, but we had no idea what any of that means. All we knew was that we were a powerful dude who on a ship under attack by colorful aliens. Answers and context came in time.
