And all joking aside, I'm saying that I'm going to keep calling them the Storm Covenant because it's a useful name. The Covenant name is doing too much legwork at the moment; it's the name of the union between Elites and Prophets that splintered in Halo 2, it's the name for Jul 'Mdama's group, it's the name for all these other splinter factions that fans like to celebrate, and it's a catch-all term for the alien races that made up the Covenant to begin with. "The Storm" or "Storm Covenant" is a great shorthand to let other fans know that I'm talking about Jul 'Mdama's group.

Also, like Miss Grizzlei said, it's a perfectly metal name.

It does make sense.
But in addition to brevity, I think that "Storm Covenant" gained traction because Halo 4 paid almost zero acknowledgement to the Great Schism. People wanted some recognition that the Covenant they were fighting weren't the same Covenant they'd fought in Halo: Combat Evolved, and calling Jul's faction "The Storm Covenant" was one way of accomplishing that.

Now the factions formerly known as the Covenant are making their way into the story, so "Storm Covenant" has only got convenience and inertia going for it.
