In Response To: So, ODST, how does it look? (scarab)

: I haven't got an xbone yet, nor the MCC so it would be quite an outlay.

: OTOH 1080p ODST may be worth it to me. I'm swithering.

: I think I was waiting to hear what uberfoop thought of it (the visuals).

They got around to fixing the shadow offset issue (for Halo 3 as well), although that's a fairly minor detail.

The brightness curves have exactly the same issue as in Halo 3, and it has a massive impact on the appearance of areas like Mombasa Streets.
Because the luminance range is very compressed, turning on VISR in dark environments has an oddly small impact, and this is further impacted by the VISR outlines being significantly less pronounced (still one pixel wide, but on a much higher-res buffer). There were actually times in more greenly-lit areas when I subconsciously thought that I had VISR on, and turned it on when I went to turn it off. I didn't feel a strong need to use VISR very often.
The brightness changes give the game's rain effect a lot more visibility. This really isn't a good thing, as it's a pretty low-quality implementation that benefits from subtlety.
The game's original appearance is very harsh, and the MCC version is definitely gentler on the eyes, but it lost some of its mood.

The game does move much more smoothly, since it's 60fps and doesn't have the frame-pacing issues that Halo 3 originally did. For the most part it looks nice in that respect, although some of the cutscene animations (especially with faces) didn't interpolate up very well.

The game is much less grainy now. Most of that is the higher resolution and decent-quality post-process AA; there's less shimmering, and jaggies on big edges are totally cleaned up. The film grain also seems much less pronounced, which is going to be good or bad depending on who you ask.

As far as audio goes, 343i improved things significantly a while ago, particularly for people who were seeing mixed-up channels. Although the core sound filtering and balancing still seems somewhat different. It's not terrible (and most people don't seem to have noticed), but it's a bit weird.

//================

It's not terrible, and the 1080p60 seems to make it worth it for most people. I'm not sure that I personally prefer it over the original release, but it has its strengths.
