Not really. It was all still terribly inefficient on big vehicles, but the D drivetrain Tesla's just launched is quite a big move in the right direction. Had they figured it out earlier, I'm sure you'd all be driving Tesla's SUVs by now.

That... might take a while. Breaking down water and rebinding it within the same system while still having a net gain of energy is pretty much impossible, unless there's some magical as-of-yet unknown catalyst somewhere in there. And yes, burning hydrogen is, in practical terms, rebinding water.
