I saw that as being part of the joke, taking one of the most saccharine, ridiculous action-y properties of the 90s and going all scarred post-apocalypse with it. I think it works on a serious level too though. I'm very much against grimdark for its own sake or for the sake of trendiness or profit, and I found myself really liking how they did it for this. I'd love to see their take on the whole thing with Kat and the Zeo stuff, the gold ranger, and most of all Zedd. That guy still gives me the creeps, he'd be perfect for a darker version.
