I remember playing the original Quake on LAN back in high school and the funny death messages you'd get. It would say stuff like "Player became bored with life" when you blew yourself up with rockets or "Player discharged into the water" when you fired the lightning gun underwater (which was fatal to everyone in the water, the user included).
