Everyone here had impressive answers and theories. Time to dumb it up.

Think about it--that cave from last time...it looked so....so real....so...natural.
And it was clear that it immediately went into a dead end and led absolutely nowhere.

So, maybe they thought the growling, guttural, deformed, limping, smelly, moist, agile Covenant-weapon bearing Covenant were actually Covenant.

:-)

(I always did love that line, though.)
