I'd actually argue that that's a big problem for much of modern game development. For a character to look like part of the environment, they need to have sluggish acceleration, and they need to do things with the scenery around them outside of the player's control (since we're controlling via a few sticks and buttons). This creates a compromise between "weight" (and "sits nicely in the game world") and responsiveness.
