Halo 2 Ranking system in MCC

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/10/29/halo-the-master-chief-collections-ranking-system-detailed-ign-first

So this appears to be what I expected.

Halo 2's 1-50 is per playlist. The 1-50 is exactly Halo 2's requirements. Just like every Halo, it's based off win/loss.

However, they do not use this 1-50 for actual matchmaking. It's visual only, and is sitting on top of an invisible Trueskill (or whatever they've renamed it for the One this time) that actually does the matching for you. This is actually good because Halo 2's Elo system should never be used for actual matching again.

Social playlists use an invisible Trueskill like they've done for every Halo game (Halo 2 used an invisible version of it's ranking system)

Another way to think of it:

Your 1-50 rank is like your Reach Arena rating.
You have an invisible TS rank underneath that like Reach, minus showing you where you are on the TS ladder with a division label.

OR

Halo 1-50 is now your military rank ala Halo 3 per-playlist, except it can now go down instead of just up.
There's still a TS rank underneath -that-, in all playlists.

Makes sense?
