It's always been that way. IIRC, the last forum required you to make ~5,000 posts before you earned a signature. That way, the people who had signatures stood out as longstanding and well-versed members of the community. Or spammers. Either way, I like the concept even if I wouldn't mind dropping the number to 1,000.

Agreed. Stuff like banners and avatars is as pointless as the rank-based unlocks on Halo 4's emblems.
