Part me of thinks this...
With their newer render engines, getting outside known/tested/designed geometry could produce unexpected results to the point of crashing.
Now of course the argument against that is that you can build geometry to make it impossible to get out, rather than "invisible walls" stopping you going somewhere you really should be able to go.
So, really, this comment is a non-answer :P heh
