Well, I've played that level a fair number of times, probably more than five times, so I would assume that I would've encountered him at least once. Moreover, I doubt I would've failed to notice him - he would've shot at me regardless, in which case I think I'd have known to turn left and fight back. Still, I might try some testing at some point soon.
