CEA's cutscene animation issues were a development time thing. They started out with straight mocap, but the results needed a lot of tweaking by hand. The game shipped in the middle of that process, so it wound up with some ridiculous pure mocap, some really choppy unfinished hand-animation, and the occasional decent stuff.
"Learning their lesson" in this context would basically amount to "give the development team more than a year to build the visuals for a modern game."
