Halo 3's story dropped any kind of interesting shenanigans that Halo 2 built up with the villains. A lot of the dialogue does kind of suck.
But its narrative structuring still manages to kick a fair amount of ass overall.
The thing is, I sometimes have a hard time faulting Halo 3 for some of the ways in which it screws up coming off of Halo 2. As amazing as Halo 2's villain setup feels, I'm not sure how you could actually deliver on it. Halo 2 is walking on the edge of a knife, and I'm not convinced that said knife ever formed a bridge to a great end point.
