Well this Red Team section has six years in against the Covenant, so they got a taste of the Great War. Besides, the Twos were trained first and foremost to combat revolution. They'll be right at home in the situation Earth got herself into in 2558.

I'd imagine High Command would've transferred John into Spartan Branch after his homecoming, or maybe the Navy tried to or successfully retain the Twos under their authority. Hopefully Blue Team will come back for Mortal Dictata and shed some light on the situation.
