: It was pretty much perfect.
If I remember correctly, the idea was to stop one team getting total, overwhelming vehicle domination just by spamming fire at the vehicles and recovering them once they're empty. Especially rockets/grenades.
They'd have to go for the higher-risk/difficulty boarding, target the driver more specifically, or wait for it to respawn and secure it before the enemy did.
Plus exploding stuff is fun I guess :)
A few years ago one of the Halo designers (can't remember which) mentioned that they did ultimately prefer the Halo 1 system, personally. They said something like it forced you to be more careful with your vehicles knowing you could lose them and face an epic multi-vehicle charge on your base.
