I disagree about the aesthetics. Disregarding my personal issues with the art direction, I have a hard time deciphering dimensional depth and shapes in a lot of levels, mostly Forerunner interiors, on a fundamental visual level:
But I do indeed think graphical tricks like Loftus mentions below are really interesting and clever. I just don't enjoy them when they limit and narrow the scope of the actual gameplay (or theater experiences), if that's the case. I would never trade some graphical 'ahs' for meaningful details, wide-open areas, and rewarding inspection.
Building barriers with invisible walls specifically reduces much of what I would replay a game for, something I've done with a lot of Bungie levels for years and years. Not to mention the immersion-break of running into a magic invisible wall -at least do a "Return to Battlefield" message if you can't figure out a natural barrier. (I think I ran into one invisible wall in the normal gameplay areas in Halo 3 on Tsavo Highway. I don't recall any in ODST. Reach had a number, especially where they didn't seem necessary. Halo 4 had more than that... I hope Destiny avoids this.)
