What if you can't get that quality storytelling? What do you want then?
: Could it have been better? Of course, how depends on who you talk
: to - but everything can always be better. Hindsight is always better.
Hindsight is always better. True. Doesn't mean we can't point out the things that, honestly, they really should have caught during writing and development.
: I don't know if Halo would be better still under Bungie's wing than 343's. Do
: you?
At this point, getting shelved with Marathon and Myth while the creators work on something else would be preferable to what 343i is doing. So yes, I do know.
: We know Bungie made mistakes, we know Bungie had different priorities with
: the Halo universe. For me, 343's priorities were more focused on enhancing
: and continuing the Halo universe beyond just the video games.
So, is needlessly retconning visual aspects of the Haloverse part of "Enhancing and continuing"?
343i has published a lot more content in three years than was ever released in any three years under Bungie, but the focus has definitely been on quantity, not quality.
As for enhancing... well, when 343i tried to tie Halo 4 into the Forerunner trilogy, it fell flatter than a barn raising gone wrong. The Didact was an idiot, and the Terminals didn't match up with the Forerunner novels.
Continuing? What I wanted to see continued the most was Ghosts of Onyx. I wanted to see what mysteries the Shield World held.
And... there was no mystery. It was a glorified Forerunner parking garage. Kind of like Requiem.
: That's what
: I want. I just want them to make sure that the stories they tell are the
: best they can be.
: I hate all this Anti-343 sentiment. Bungie wasn't perfect. 343 isn't perfect.
: We love Halo. So we need encourage 343 to continue and to improve.
343i: "We love Halo, just not the Halo you love."
Did Bungie make mistakes? Absolutely. But the Halo they delivered was the Halo I fell in love with. And maybe it's because I wasn't around for Halo 2 and didn't play Halo 3 until years after it came out, but neither of those games were so disappointing as Halo 4.
I know all about the development hell Halo 2 went through, but none of it felt as soulless as the level on the Mantle's Approach, or as thoughtless as the Promethean Sandbox.
I'm sorry, but for four years is a long time to wait for 343i to have improved. Encourage them to continue and improve I will, but I'm starting to get a wee bit exasperated.
