I've tried that too; no good. One thing I did was to lead a Hunter from the cavern to the tower area. But unlike the tower covies, he never acquires any instinct to head into the pass. Best I could do there was get him to the pass entrance so he could do a bit of firing at the end of a spiral path megabattle if I came up. But he wasn't a proper part of the battle really.
