In Response To: Re: What's the point to piloting a Pelican? (General Vagueness)

: Why just in terms of what it had to do? What about what it could do or what
: you could do to or with it?

Ok, in your next post, I'm going to ask you to restate that word salad just to make sure that I've got your meaning clear.

: It controlled differently, it could take a lot
: of punishment, and it had a built-in weapon we haven't gotten to use as
: part of a vehicle before.

Um... so?
It controlled differently? Heh. If you want my opinion, it controlled like a compromise between the Hornet and the Banshee, with the convenience of being able to drop altitude at the press of a button. Even so, Banshees control differently from one game to the next, but I don't think there's enough of a difference to warrant a whole new vehicle.
It could take a lot of punishment? Yeah, like I ever got the opportunity to test that out.
We got to use a new vehicle weapon? True. It's so new, in fact, it's never been mounted to a Pelican before!
We could have gotten the same experience if we flew a Hornet that had a Spartan Laser in place of its gatling guns. We flew the Pelican as part of regular gameplay (not an easter egg) but the stuff that makes a Pelican a Pelican wasn't implemented.
OK, since I get the feeling that you're going to bring up the Hornet and Falcon, I feel that the Falcon is what happened when Bungie took the Hornet and improved upon every single one of its shortcomings. This especially worked because we didn't have any prior expectations that the Hornet or the Falcon had to live up to.
In the future, I hope that the Falcon remains a flying Warthog, while the Hornet becomes more of a flying troop hog. Give me FOUR passengers and a crate of fuel rod cannons!

: Didn't the one in Reach have boost too?

I thought so, but I wasn't sure about it.

: because co-op

TVT!
They can't be controlled remotely from the inside of the Pelican for what reason? The operator has to dangle on the outside of a heavily armored vehicle for what reason?
And no, that's not my only gripe about the hip guns. When I first saw them, I had no friggin' clue what they were. That seat didn't look like it was meant to hold someone against the airstream at five hundred kph. Those guns... Ok, I wasn't sure those were guns either.
The whole thing looked slapdash, last minute, like... like... Like I said, like tits on a Sangheili.

: it was? where?

When you're lying in the wreckage of the space station known as the Forward Unto Dawn. Stranded with no supplies aside from what's scattered throughout and slightly beyond the impact crater, with no knowledge of where you are and what this place is.
The Chief could have set up a perimeter and established a base of operations while Cortana hunted down information about the opposition and the location... or he could have jumped into the nearest Warthog and drove off in the one, single path that the level designer laid out.

: What, you mean in the next game?

Next game. Game after that. Any game by 343i with the Chief as the protagonist.
The whole point of the post is that the Chief is the tip of the spear, the one who leads the assault, and the Pelican is a support role. One can't fly the other without ignoring what one of them is. There's always the outside chance that we fly one in a level like Crow's Nest, but I find that unlikely.
