Perseus, I have been advocating something like this for a long time!
(Guess how many saves I have preserved for my Halo 3 projects. Probably over 400. Half of those are generic projects: http://i.imgur.com/qtgLHuA.png )
In particular, we should be able to backup our saves on the fly.
On the Xbox 360, to backup a save, you have to exit to the dashboard > system settings > storage and transfer the content to an usb drive (there's also an officially supported Xbox 360 transfer cable but I'm unfamiliar with it), which you then have to manually take out and plug into your PC, which can be especially inconvenient if your PC is not nearby.
You also have to exit the game regularly to do this, so for games like Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo: Anniversary, which inexplicably have unskippable promotional material before the menu can be accessed, it can be a chore.
In Halo 3, this is an inconvenience if you have a lot of saved films, so every time you do this procedure, if you haven't transferred the films as well, you'll have to wait in that Campaign lobby for 3-5 minutes before getting started again.
Halo PC is probably the only Halo game I have little to none qualms about, you can easily guess why.
