I don't know about the Mac, but for the PC it should be doable. The only thing that -might- be an issue is that the original profile name is stored in the player memory part of the game save (savegame.bin/checkpoint#.bin/autosave#.bin). Then again, I don't think that data would ever be used in the campaign so it should be fine.
You can test it yourself. Create two profiles, get a save/checkpoint with one, put it in the other's profile/checkpoints folder and see if it comes up.
Only major usability problem will be having to manually manage this process, without any metadata about the saves themselves (except what the site may allow). If HaloPC was still really active (I mean, it's no way 'dead', but not what I would say 'really'), I would think it would be cool to create an app to handle the local management plus site submission processes. But I don't really see that being time well spent today.
