IIRC, in Halo 3 at least, swinging the hammer (while it has power) produces an impulse in the opposite direction no matter where you are. It kind of makes sense since it's not so much pushing on something as it's pushing on everything, regardless of what or where it is, with the gravity blast.

That would be the Invulnerability equipment. Kill a Brute chieftain, pick it up, and boom, you've got temporary god mode on the X button.
