I would recommend finding out if the hospital is for profit or not. If it it is not-for-profit, most build up a bank of funds specifically for need-based situations. For instance, if you have no insurance, or even if you have crappy insurance and the bill is exorbitant (a week in the ICU will do that) they will often write it off entirely, if not work out a graded billing plan. Push for this information though, hospitals don't usually advertise this. For-profit hospitals will also have similar options, but they are harder to qualify for. Again, be pushy in your inquiries.
